Depression Therapy in Caldwell, NJ

Don’t wait for it to get worse.

One of the things I hear most often from people coming in for depression is some version of: "I had a feeling I should get help, but I didn’t know where to start." Depression has a way of turning your own suffering against you, making you feel like you should be able to handle it on your own, and since you can’t, no one would be able to help anyway.

Depression therapy isn't a last resort. It's a practical, evidence-based way to understand what's happening and build a path back to the person you want to be. I've worked with people across Essex County, NJ who came in feeling completely stuck and left with energy, perspective, and real forward motion.

If you're reading this and thinking "maybe that's me", that's enough reason to reach out.

What Is Depression?

More than sadness, and more treatable than you think.

Depression is a clinical condition that affects how you think, feel, and function. It's not a personality type, a weakness, or something you can just push through. It has real neurological underpinnings and real, effective treatments.

What depression actually is

A persistent disruption in mood, energy, motivation, and cognition. It affects how you experience pleasure, how you see yourself and the future, and how you relate to the people around you. It's not just "feeling sad", it's a shift in the entire filter through which you experience your life.

What depression is not

A character flaw. Laziness. Something you should be able to snap out of. Depression isn't a reflection of who you are. It's a condition you're experiencing. And like most conditions, it responds to proper treatment. You wouldn't white-knuckle through a broken leg. You don't have to white-knuckle through this either.

Depression and relationships

Depression rarely stays contained to the person experiencing it. It affects partners, children, and colleagues, often in ways that create more isolation and shame. I pay close attention to the relational dimension of depression and use it as both motivation and a measure of progress.

Depression and anxiety

These two conditions frequently travel together. Anxiety is the nervous system in overdrive; depression is often the exhaustion that follows. I treat both and pay close attention to how they interact in your specific situation, rather than treating them as separate problems with separate solutions.

Recognizing the Signs

Depression doesn't always look like depression.

Many people don't recognize their own depression because it doesn't match the image they have of it. Here are the signs I see most often.

Emotional flatness
Not sadness exactly, more like nothing. Things that used to matter don't register. You go through the day feeling distant from your own life.
Loss of motivation
Tasks that used to feel manageable now feel enormous. Getting started on anything, even things you care about, takes more than you have.
Withdrawal
Canceling plans, pulling back from people, letting relationships go quiet. Not because you don't care, but because connecting feels like too much.
Irritability & anger
Depression doesn't always look quiet. For many people it shows up as a short fuse, frustration, or a general feeling of being ground down.
Changes in sleep & appetite
Sleeping too much or too little. Eating more or less than usual. Your body registering what your mind is going through.
Negative self-talk
A persistent inner voice that's critical, hopeless, or dismissive. Feeling like a burden, like things won't get better, like you're falling behind everyone else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Depression therapy — your questions answered

How do I know if what I'm feeling is depression or just a rough patch?

The key distinction is persistence and impact. A rough patch is usually tied to a specific situation and eases when things improve. Depression tends to linger, generalize, and affect multiple areas of life, sleep, motivation, relationships, self-worth — even when circumstances change. If you've been feeling this way for more than a few weeks and it's getting in the way of your life, it's worth talking to someone.

Can therapy actually help depression, or do I need medication?

Therapy, particularly CBT, has strong evidence for treating depression, often comparable to medication for mild to moderate cases. Some people benefit from both. I'm not a prescriber, so I can't recommend medication, but I'll always be honest with you if I think a consultation with a psychiatrist might be helpful alongside our work. Many of my clients do very well with therapy alone.

What if I don't have the energy to do therapy right now?

This is one of depression's crueler tricks, it takes away the motivation to do the very thing that would help. I know that. I'll meet you where you are, and we'll work at a pace that's sustainable. You don't need to show up "ready." You just need to show up.

How long does depression therapy take?

It varies. Most people feel significant improvement within 8–12 sessions. More complex presentations or co-occurring disorders may need longer-term work. I'll give you a realistic sense of what to expect during our consultation, and we'll adjust as we go.

Do you offer telehealth for depression therapy in NJ?

Yes. I offer secure telehealth sessions to anyone in New Jersey. If you're in Essex County but can't make it to my Caldwell, NJ office, or if you simply prefer remote sessions, telehealth works just as well for depression treatment.

What's a typical first session like?

We talk. I'll ask about what's been going on, what you've tried, and what you're hoping for. You don't need to have it all figured out. The first session is about building enough understanding to move forward and giving you a sense of whether I'm the right fit.

Do you take insurance for depression therapy?

I'm an out-of-network provider, so I don't bill insurance directly. I provide a superbill after each session that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Many clients receive partial reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits. HSA and FSA accounts are accepted. Individual sessions are $225 for 45 minutes. A sliding scale is also available based on income. I'm happy to give you a clear picture of what therapy will cost before we get started.

What's Possible

What depression therapy with me can do for you

Here’s what change tends to look like:

Feel present in your own life again
Not just going through the motions. Actually engaged with your day, your work, your relationships. The flatness lifts. Things register again.
Reconnect with the people you love
Depression isolates. Therapy helps you close that distance — with your partner, your kids, your friends — and rebuild the connections depression quietly erodes.
Break the cycle of negative thinking
The inner critic that tells you you're not enough, that things won't change, that you're a burden. We work directly on that voice and change what it says.
Rediscover motivation and energy
Not through willpower but through identifying what’s important to you, what’s the tiniest first step you can take, and then taking it. Each little step leads to a bit more confidence.
Understand yourself more clearly
Where depression came from, what maintains it, and what conditions help it lift. That clarity means you're not at its mercy anymore.
Develop tools that last
The goal isn't to need therapy forever. It's to build skills and self-awareness that stay with you, so you know how to respond when hard things come up again.
