About Chris  ·  Caldwell, NJ  ·  Essex County

Healthy, Loving, and Strong.

I help men become the best version of themselves: healthy, loving and strong. They work with me to become the sons, brothers, spouses, and fathers their families deserve, and to achieve the life they deserve. I specialize in helping men whose anxiety, depression, anger, and/or addiction are interfering with their relationships and goals. I can also help couples break the same old pattern that has them fed up and exhausted. Life can be much, much better than this

Chris Tomkins, LPC — Therapist in Caldwell NJ
LPC NCC ACS CCS Caldwell, NJ 18 Years Experience

You keep replaying that last argument in your head or imagining the next one. Your body is along for the ride. The pit in your stomach, the chest tightness, as if it were happening right now. You're impatient and irritable. Talking about it leads to arguing, so you keep it all inside, until you blow up again. The things you turn to in order to cope cause more problems. No more. You want your choices to align with your values. You want to be calm and present. You want your relationships to be peaceful and close. I can help.

— Chris Tomkins, LPC

Who I Work With

The people I'm most drawn to helping.

I work with adults across Essex County, NJ and throughout New Jersey — in person in Caldwell and via telehealth. These are the people I see most often, and the situations I'm best equipped to help with.

Individuals whose issues affect their relationships
Anxiety, depression, anger, and addiction don't stay contained. They spill into the relationships that matter most. I provide effective, professional help for these highly treatable conditions.
High-conflict couples
The same fight over and over for years and years. One person pursues, one withdraws. Or both escalate until something breaks. I use Terry Real's Relational Life Therapy to interrupt those cycles, not just identify them.
People who've tried to change and keep getting stuck
Willpower isn't enough. Neither is insight alone. I work with people who know what they need to do but can't seem to do it. Together, we figure out what's actually in the way.
My Approach

Direct. Practical. On your side and honest about it.

I'm probably more direct than most therapists. I'll tell you what I see. If something is getting in your way, I'll name it. Respectfully, but clearly. Therapy that just reflects things back without going anywhere isn't useful, and I don't practice it.

That said, there's nothing harsh about my approach. I'm genuinely on your side. In couples work especially, I'm firmly against the problem behaviors damaging the relationship — not against either person. I create an alliance between myself and the people in the room, pointed at the patterns, not at each other.

  • CBT
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for anxiety, depression, and the thought patterns driving them
  • Relational Life Therapy (RLT)
Terry Real's action-oriented couples model, built for real change fast
  • Motivational Interviewing
For addiction and ambivalence, meeting you where you are
  • Relapse prevention
Practical tools for sustaining change after it happens
  • Clinical supervision
I also provide supervision for therapists seeking ACS or CCS credentials
"Anxiety, depression, anger, and addiction are treatable conditions. I help people be their best selves: healthy, loving, and strong. That is not a tagline. It is what I've watched people become when the conditions are right and the work gets done."

Frequently Asked Questions

About working with Chris

Are you currently accepting new clients?

Yes — I'm actively accepting new individual clients and couples in Caldwell, NJ and throughout Essex County. The best way to get started is a free 20-minute consultation. You can book directly online at any time.

What's your therapy style like?

Direct, practical, and genuinely on your side, but honest. I'll tell you what I see. I'm not the kind of therapist who just reflects things back and waits for insight to emerge on its own. Therapy should move. That said, there's nothing harsh about my approach, I'm warm toward the people I work with and firm against the patterns hurting them. In couples work especially, I create an alliance between myself and both partners, pointed at the problem, not at each other.

Do you offer telehealth sessions?

Yes. All individual and couples services are available via secure telehealth to anyone in New Jersey. In-person sessions are available at my office at 12 Smull Avenue, Caldwell, NJ — just off Bloomfield Avenue. Many clients choose a mix of both depending on their schedule.

What areas do you serve?

My office is in Caldwell, NJ, and I see clients in person from throughout Essex County — including West Caldwell, North Caldwell, Verona, Montclair, Livingston, Roseland, Cedar Grove, Bloomfield, Essex Fells, and Nutley. Via telehealth, I work with clients anywhere in New Jersey.

What's the difference between your individual therapy and couples therapy?

In individual therapy, we focus on what's happening inside you. The anxiety, depression, addiction, or behavioral patterns that are getting in the way of the life and relationships you want. In couples therapy, the relationship itself is the focus. I use Terry Real's Relational Life Therapy for both, but the structure, pace, and goals are quite different. Many couples find that one partner also doing individual work alongside couples sessions accelerates progress significantly.

Do you work with anxiety and depression together?

Yes, and often they need to be treated together. Anxiety and depression are deeply connected for many people. Anxiety is the nervous system in overdrive; depression is often the exhaustion that follows. I pay close attention to how they interact in your specific situation rather than treating them as separate problems with separate solutions. Both respond well to CBT and the relational approach I use.

Do you provide clinical supervision?

Yes. I hold both the Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) and Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS) credentials, and I provide supervision to associate-level counselors pursuing licensure in New Jersey and to those working in addiction settings. If you're a clinician looking for a supervisor, reach out directly.

Do you take insurance?

I'm an out-of-network provider, which means I don't bill insurance directly. After each session I provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Many clients receive partial reimbursement through their out-of-network mental health benefits. I also offer a sliding scale for clients who may not be able to afford the standard rate, please reach out to ask. HSA and FSA accounts are accepted.
